Within the beauty and fashion communities, there are is a lot of insider lingo, that unless you are an avid follower, you may have no idea what your favorite vlogger is talking about. Below is a list of definitions to help you navigate the sometimes confusing slang used by the industry’s top creators.

Beat: “beat” can be used as a verb or adjective, and it’s all about beauty. To beat is to apply makeup, and if someone is described as being “beat,” it means they either applied their makeup well, or just applied a lot of it.

Canceled: to cancel someone is to stop supporting them or their work

Clock: to pay attention to something/ to see something clearly

Clout Chaser: someone who tries to feed off others popularity to benefit themselves

Dspill the teaead: means that something is so funny or ridiculously good it’s forced you to be hyperbolic

Drama/ Commentary: drama channels are YouTube channels that focus on sharing the “tea” or the conflicts and gossip within the beauty, YouTube, TikTok, and Fashion communities. Commentary is derived from drama, but provides more facts and focuses less on opinions

Gag: if something/ someone is so good, or so shocking, you’ll gag over it

Get Your Coin: means to get paid via monetization either from income through a YouTube channel, Instagram partnerships, brand deals, or affiliate codes

Karmageddon: karmageddon happened between June 11th and June 21st and was aimed at Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson facing karma/ backlash for their involvement in dramageddon 2. Karmageddon led to dramageddon 3 erupting on June 22nd.

Keep The Same Energy: means to not change your reaction because of new developments. Do what you were doing before you found out more information on the drama unfolding

Receipts: a receipt is to show accountability/ tangible proof of claims you are making. Asking someone to show you the receipts essentially means you want the proof

Shade: acting in a casual or disrespectful manner towards someone/ dissing a friend

Shook: this the term became popularized in ’90s hip-hop/ R&B scene. To feel shook is to be shaken up by something, for better or worse

Snatched: if a person’s hair, makeup, or outfit looks particularly fab, they’re snatched

Social Climber: someone who attempts to gain a higher social position or acceptance in fashionable society

Tea/ Spill: tea is all about exchanging hot gossip. You can get tea, spill tea, and give tea. This term derives from ’80s and ’90s ball culture.

Vlogger: a vlogger is someone who creates content about their everyday life through the medium of video production
